Set Up Webmail in Flock

Web-based email services (also known as Webmail) are rapidly gaining popularity. Flock plugs into several Webmail services to make your web browsing experience as integrated as possible.

In this section:

Set Up a Webmail Account in Flock

Activating a Webmail Account in Flock is as easy as logging into the service. Flock currently supports the following Webmail services:

Once logged in, Flock will present you with a messagebar with a "Remember Account" button. Click this button if you'd like Flock to remember your Webmail Account and work more seamlessly with it (we recommend this, unless you are on a shared computer).

Multiple Webmail Accounts can be configured in Flock. While both a Gmail and Yahoo! Mail account can be logged in at the same time, multiple accounts on the same service can not (just like in any browser).

Using Webmail in Flock

Once your Webmail Account is activated, Flock's Webmail features can be reached via the Webmail icon in the Flockbar . This icon will glow when you have new messages in your default Webmail account. Clicking this button will provide dropdown options for your Webmail Account(s).

  • The first line is lists your account and the number of unread messages you have. Clicking this will take you to your inbox.
  • Below this is the latest 4 unread messages in your inbox. Clicking any of these will take you directly to the message.
  • The "more" button will take you to your inbox.
  • "Check Now" shows when your Webmail data within Flock was last refreshed. Clicking it will refresh this data and show you new messages.
  • "Compose Message" takes you to a new blank message. You will notice that these messages (unlike messages initiated directly from the Webmail interface) have a tagline from Flock at the bottom. This can be removed manually, or can be turned off by opening Webmail Settings and unchecking "Include 'Shared with Flock' text when Sharing Content".
  • "Share Current Web Page" will place the URL (address) of the page you are on in a new message.
  • "Share Flock" will take you to the Share Flock form, which you can use to tell your friends about how cool Flock (and especially the Webmail integration) is.
  • "Webmail Settings" will take you to the Webmail Settings dialog, which we'll discuss in Sharing With Webmail.

Multiple Webmail Accounts

As mentioned before, you can set up multiple Webmail accounts in Flock simply by logging into them. As with any browser, you can only be logged into one account on each service at a time. You can, however, have both a Gmail and Yahoo! Mail account activated at the same time. If you do, the Webmail button will show a slightly different menu.

The bolded email address is your primary account. The account you have most recently logged into will be your primary account. To choose a specific account as Primary, open Webmail Settings and uncheck "Always set the last account you have logged into as the primary account". Then open the menu for the account and click the "Use as Primary Webmail Account" button. This account will now become bold.

Sharing with Webmail

Webmail is integrated with Flock to an extent no other browser currently supports. By default, once you told Flock to remember a supported Webmail account in Flock, Webmail will become your primary method of sending email within Flock.

Webmail will now be used for all default email options in the browser, including:

  • Email links (mailto:) on web pages
  • The "Share this link via email" button on the Address Bar [Screenshot of this button]
  • The "Email This" button for photos and videos in the Media Minibar [Screenshot of this button]
  • The "Email" option for items in the Web Clipboard
  • The "Send Link" option when you right-click a link
  • The "Email" option at the bottom of articles in the Feed Reader
  • The "Send Image" option when you right-click an image
  • The "Email" option in the Flockmagic mouse-over

To disable this option, open Webmail Settings and choose "When sending email in Flock: Use external email program".
