Hey Flockstars,
Update: Flock 2.5.1, including a fix for the Flickr issue, is available from our homepage as of July 28th. More info on this release.
As you may have noticed, the Flock integration with Flickr is not functioning properly. We've communicated with many of you individually, but we want to also provide a broader overview of the questions we’ve been receiving for the benefit of all Flock users.
Why do service outages happen?
Flock integrates with a number of services, and it detects these services when you log in. This makes it easy for you to discover and access Flock's social features.
Unfortunately, this also means that if some part of the login process changes on the service website and Flock can't recognize it, Flock thinks you're not logged in. You will have no trouble using the website, but Flock's features that integrate with that service may not work as expected.
How does Flock normally fix this?
Normally we can update the file that Flock refers to for recognizing service logins. Once we've changed this file, Flock downloads the latest version of this file automatically in the background. This usually happens within 24 hours, and thanks to our vigilant developer team this usually means 48 hours or less of downtime.
What is different this time?
This time the change made on Flickr.com was so dramatic that the changes we have to make go beyond what we can do in the file fix mentioned above. We're going to have to make additional changes to other browser files. This means that we can't fix the Flickr outage automatically over the air - we'll actually have to create a revised version of Flock.
Why do browser updates take so long?
Making an update or applying fixes to the Flock browser is sometimes quick and sometimes not. Regardless of how easy to fix, we still have to take all new versions of Flock through a rigorous testing process to ensure that we deliver stable, reliable code to our loyal community.
When our Flickr integration broke, we were already partway into the process of putting together Flock 2.5.1, which includes some key fixes: some rather troublesome Twitter bug fixes, some broken Facebook Chat functionality, and a bunch of other items that are negatively affecting many Flockstars.
At that point the choice was fairly clear: if we stopped work on 2.5.1 and created a new version of Flock that *only* fixed the Flickr integration, we'd double the amount of testing we had to do...and we would delay the release of the 2.5.1 improvements, hurting the folks who aren't affected by the Flickr issue but are affected by Twitter and Facebook Chat issues. By including the Flickr fix in 2.5.1, we're saving time and getting you a whole bunch of fixes sooner.
Ok, so when do we get the new version?
We're in the midst of testing Flock 2.5.1 now to make sure it’s a stable release, and we're hoping to have it out to you within the next two weeks. Keep your eyes here, on our GetSatisfaction page, on our Twitter account, or on our Facebook page for a notice when it is released. Please note that we will not be sending out an auto-update immediately - you'll initially have to manually upgrade by downloading and running the installer.
I hope this has given you a clear understanding of why there is no Flickr fix yet and what we're doing to ensure you have the best Flock experience possible. We're certainly not ignoring this issue - we're simply making the decisions needed to get you the latest and greatest version of Flock ASAP.
Thanks for your patience throughout this issue, and hang in there just a short time longer.

Update: One clarification I want to make based on feedback I've seen: 2.5.1 does not include any new features. We're not delaying your Flickr fix in order to get new features out the door. 2.5.1 is entirely bug fixes, which is why we want to get it out at the same time as the Flickr fix rather than delaying it.

Great update Evan. I m one of the multitude that is most thankful for ll the effort you are putting in to this, and really appreciate Flock as a whole..
Waiting eagerly for the next version..
Any ideas when Flock will incorporate Firefox 3.5?
Peace,
Mango the Fruitarian
Evan,
Bravo. Thank you for the explanation. It's not the fact it stopped working as much as the fact it wasn't expected or explained when it happened. Flock is a huge asset to Flickr. Looking forward to the update!
Update to Firefox 3.5 scheduled already?
Hi Evan, I think Flock is an incrdible piece of ingenuity, but I have to say it has fallen to second place behind Firefox 3.5. as far as I am concerned. Its only fair to tell you the reason which is, not only do I find Firefox 3.5 to be blistering fast, but it is campatible with Zone Alarm Forcefied which I use. If you use the Firefox 3.5 engine and make it compatible with Forcefield, then I am sure it will regain its number one psition with me and some of my friends. Best wishes,
Tim
yeah, "midst of testing Flock 2.5.1" but why you cant release translated versions in same time; i hate waiting for my lang. version so long...
what about latest Fx update - 3.5.1, Flock will be based on this code? or on prev. one?
if only that flickr sidebar would keep popping up every time I look at a photo...
will that be fixed in version 2.5.1 ???
will the next version be based on ff3.5. ?
love
@applepie: We are working on localizing Flock 2.5 at the same time as building 2.5.1. I can't provide any insight into a release date, but localizations are definitely not on hold.
@a1newspapers: We're having some comment issues on the blog that I will try to work through. Expect more permanent solutions in the future.
@Erick: Yup, that'll be fixed in 2.5.1.
@mango @rene1 @applepie @Tim @Tom @a1newspapers: We are keeping our eye on Firefox 3.5 in the field. Upgrading Flockstars to a new major release is a task we don't take likely, and we want to avoid any migration issues that may still exist in 3.5. We'll be watching it's performance and making a move when we feel the code is solid enough for you all.

With Firefox 3.0.12 now released and Flock 2.5 using 3.0.10 that's 9 critical, 2 High and 2 Moderate impact vulnerabilities unfixed in Flock; that's a pretty insecure environment to be working with Social Media pages.

Time to reconsider your security patching process?
@visibleprocrastinations: the Firefox 3.0.12 security fixes will be included in the Flock 2.5.1 release which will be out in the next week. Security is a top priority here. As is considerate, constructive discussion.

Just downloaded Flock (2.0.3 as it's the UK English localised version) and am having a look around. Noticed something funny with Flickr but very pleased to find this explanation so soon, so I know it's not only a problem at my end. Thanks!
@alistr: I did that too at first, then i went back to the flcok homepage and downloaded the one off the main page. I'm probably using the american one instead now but the U.K. English localised version caused me to download flock 2.0. I have no idea why this is but it did it to you too. Is it a mistake in the link or is there no Uk version of flock 2.5?
@robertCr: There's currently no UK English version of 2.5, but I believe it's scheduled to come out very soon, along with some other localizations.

Is there a more precise ETA for the arrival of 2.5.1?
Hi,
1) When will the french version in 2.5 will be out?
2) Will you create a same service than Opera created (Opera Unite)? It would be great and much "Web 2.0".
3) Will you create an integration of a VPN service? (like JanusVM for example www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/86043 . It would be great for having a good security.
Thank you for the quality of your work.

Great update Evan, when the new french version should be released?
What an update Evan! I too am waiting for the new french version.
My Flock browser is doing the same thing with Flickr again that it did before this fix. I can't get to my pictures again to drag and drop them. :(
Evan I am STILL having problems with remaining logged into flickr! All other services are fine. This is in the latest build. Every time I start Flock again I am logged out of Flickr.
