Flock Related Questions - Marketing Related

Hey flockers.

I am a new flock user. I adopted it out of curiosity as I am a tech nut. I am constantly on the lookout for new software/tech to blog about, and a guy on a local LUG mailing list told me about flock.

Now I am planning to review flock, and would like to as a few questions from the community and the developers if they'd be so kind as to answer them.

The list of questions are a bit haphazard, but I hope they will help crystallize a few thoughts I have on this project.

Product related questions:

  • What version of Firefox is Flock 1.1 (the one I will be reviewing) based on? My reason for asking is that it registers on my hit counter as FF2.0.
  • Other Mozilla based browsers, such as Iceweasel and Seamonkey - which are basically a rebrand of Firefox -, have their own unique signature on java counters. Is there a plan to give Flock it's own signature?
  • Is there a plan to include some of the features of Firefox 3?
  • Do you have an estimate of how many flock users there are?
  • Do you report any bugs that might be Mozilla related upstream?
  • Is there a working relationship between the Mozilla foundation and the Flock group/community?
  • Is Flock a FOSS product, or just free?
  • What licence is Flock licensed under?
  • Are there plans to turn Flock into a paid-for browser? If so, will there still be a free version available?
  • Review Related Questions

  • Is there a corporate logo, marketing image that you would like me to use as a link to your site instead of the regular hyperlink?
  • Are there any features you would like me to highlight?
  • Is there a corporate statement you want included in the review?
  • On my blog you will find a full review af Hardy Heron, it will give you guys a good idea of what a Flock review will look like.

    TIA

    Hey Quintin,

Thanks for the blog post! Here are some answers:

    Product related questions:

    # What version of Firefox is Flock 1.1 (the one I will be reviewing) based on? My reason for asking is that it registers on my hit counter as FF2.0.

Flock 1.1 is based on the latest version of Firefox 2. We keep up-to-date with all their security updates.

    # Other Mozilla based browsers, such as Iceweasel and Seamonkey - which are basically a rebrand of Firefox -, have their own unique signature on java counters. Is there a plan to give Flock it's own signature?

Flock has it's own User Agent String, but is not detected by the major entities as anything other than Firefox. This may be changing in the future, but I don't have a definitive answer for you right now.

    # Is there a plan to include some of the features of Firefox 3?

Yup, we'll be moving to the Firefox3 codebase later this year, after they release. We'll be absorbing most of the major changes (performance, rendering, security, etc) and melding them in with our features like we did with the Firefox2 codebase.

    # Do you have an estimate of how many flock users there are?

We have downloaded approximately 3.5 million browsers to date, rapidly approaching 1.5 million downloads since our launch of 1.0 in November of 2007. You can find some related information in this press release.

    # Do you report any bugs that might be Mozilla related upstream?

We not only report, but we also upstream fixes for Mozilla-related bugs. We are fully supportive of the Mozilla platform and community, and we love it when we can help out! If you're interested in the specifics, I may be able to find them for you. Let me know!

    # Is there a working relationship between the Mozilla foundation and the Flock group/community?

There is no official relationship, but many of our developers and community members cross over between these communities. We're certainly not strangers with the Mozilla guys.

    # Is Flock a FOSS product, or just free?

Flock is a for-profit company, but our software is free and open source. We don't plan to charge for the browser, but we do plan to continue exploring different revenue models within the browser.

    # What licence is Flock licensed under?

Flock is licensed under a GPL.

    # Are there plans to turn Flock into a paid-for browser? If so, will there still be a free version available?

We do not plan to charge for Flock. We make money the same way that Firefox does (through the search widget), which has been very profitable for them. We may explore other ways to make money (specifically revshare with integrated services), but we do not plan to charge. We think free is a good price.

    # Is there a corporate logo, marketing image that you would like me to use as a link to your site instead of the regular hyperlink?

If you'd like, you can use the Flock logo (the first one) at http://flock.com/art.

    # Are there any features you would like me to highlight?

    Whatever you find compelling! :)

    # Is there a corporate statement you want included in the review?

Nah, you're a good writer. Looking forward to seeing your continuing thoughts on Flock!
